Apple’s first-ever foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, made its official retail debut on Friday, October 23, at Apple Stores around the globe. While the release is a major milestone for the company's hardware roadmap, immediate walk-in availability at physical locations proved difficult to secure. Apple had previously warned that inventory levels at its retail stores would be limited, a prediction that materialized as queues formed overnight only to face stock shortages by morning.
The rollout began early in the day, with the company issuing a press release featuring photographs of the launch activities occurring internationally. The company stated that Apple Store locations worldwide were filled with customers eager to experience the device. Store employees were on hand to offer demonstrations of the foldable form factor along with personalized shopping support.
Executive leadership distributed themselves across key markets for the event. In New York, Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, was present at the Fifth Avenue flagship store alongside Vanessa Trigub, who serves as head of Apple Retail. This activity occurred alongside separate events taking place in Texas.
In Austin, Texas, Apple CEO John Ternus marked the occasion at the Domain NORTHSIDE location. He appeared there with Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of retail and people. Ternus’s presence in the city aligns with a busy weekend for Apple in the region; he had toured Apple’s Austin offices earlier this week. Furthermore, the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix is scheduled for this weekend in Austin. Apple holds the exclusive streaming rights for Formula 1 in the United States.
Despite the excitement surrounding the debut, prospective buyers hoping to purchase the device without a reservation were largely unsuccessful. Lines formed at Apple Stores globally overnight as customers attempted to secure walk-in availability. However, staff reported that stock was indeed limited. Employees instructed disappointed shoppers to utilize the Apple Store application to check for in-store inventory details the following day, scheduled for 10 a.m. ET.
The launch of the Duo represents the company's entry into the foldable market, a form factor it has not previously utilized for its primary smartphone line. Apple provided hands-on demos and shopping assistance at its stores to facilitate the transition to the new hardware design for interested consumers.
Customers who visited stores on Friday to retrieve online orders or attempt a walk-in purchase are navigating a high-demand environment with restricted supply at the physical retail level. While the global debut drew crowds and executive attention in major cities like New York and Austin, securing a device for immediate purchase at a store location will likely depend on checking inventory updates on October 24.
